Music is the lifeblood of every church congregation. It brings us together, and allows us to collectively express ourselves to God in worship.
There is much that goes on behind the scenes in your church to make this a reality. Effective management of the copyright issues related to church music should be one of them. Unfortunately, there is much misunderstanding and misinformation in this area. This page seeks to address that.
The documents below should be reviewed by the leadership and worship teams in your church, and acted on appropriately. There are checklists contained in the documents for use by those filling various church roles, and a checklist for use by your church board.
The responsibility for managing copyright effectively and lawfully still rests with your church board, as it always has.
Documents Available For Download
At the present time, information documents have been produced for churches in Australia and New Zealand only, and are available for download below. All documents have been prepared as PDF files, and should be read using the PDF reader on your device. You may freely print the contents of any of these documents, and distribute them as required to your church members. Updated versions of these documents will be made available on this website from time to time.
Copyright laws vary between countries, so please make sure that you download the documents that apply to the country in which your church is located.
Microsoft PowerPoint files are now available for download – for each hymn where the lyrics are in the public domain. See below for a link to download a zip file containing all available hymns (four variations per hymns are included in the zip file, including 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios).
